Chapter 01
What we cover
Tidal Media reports on environmental harm: who caused it, who knew, and who ends up paying. We follow the land, the water and the money, usually in that order.
Our work is slow on purpose. A single investigation can take months of records requests, site visits and long conversations before a word of it is published. We would rather be late and right than first and wrong.
Chapter 02
How we report
We build stories on documents wherever we can get them: permits, inspection reports, court filings, internal emails, monitoring data. When we make a claim, we want to be able to show you the page it came from.
Everyone we write about gets a real chance to respond before we publish, with enough time to answer properly. If they decline, we say so.
“If we can't show where a fact came from, it doesn't run.”
Chapter 03
How we protect sources
A lot of what we publish starts with someone who took a risk to tell us. We take that seriously, starting with this website. There are no ad trackers, no analytics scripts and no third-party code on any page, and our fonts and images are served from our own domain.
We never name a confidential source without their permission, and we don't keep more information about them than the story needs. Our tip line explains, step by step, the safest ways to reach us.
Chapter 04
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we fix it in the story and add a note at the bottom saying what changed and when. We don't quietly edit mistakes away.
If you spot an error, tell us through the contact details on the tip line page and we'll look into it.
